Help:Images
From JMB Wiki
This is a ShoutWiki help page, hosted at ShoutWiki Hub. If you want to suggest changes, leave a message on its talk page. If you want to replace this page with a custom help page for your wiki, click the create button above.
Logged in users can upload images to ShoutWiki wikis.
Licensing
GFDL or Creative Commons images and images in the public domain are highly preferred on ShoutWiki. Media which violates any copyrights will be deleted on sight. Every uploaded image is required to have copyright information on its description page.
Externally hosted images
The use of externally hosted images on ShoutWiki sites is restricted. Only images from whitelisted domains will be rendered as images, all other images will be rendered as external links. The whitelist can be customized at MediaWiki:External image whitelist.
Image copyright tags
Images also need to have a tag added, describing what license they are under. For instance, the text {{GFDL}} placed on an image description page will display:
Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "GNU Free Documentation License". |
See Help:Image copyright tags for more information.
Video and other files
If not in violation of any copyright, certain file types (.mov, .swf, .mp3, and others) can be uploaded. Please refer to Help:Uploading files for the most up-to-date list of allowed filetypes. Images and audio are generally not a problem, but there is a size-per-file limit of 100 MB. You can embed YouTube videos to ShoutWiki wikis without having to upload them to the wiki.
It is recommended that you upload large files to off-site picture hosting services, such as Imageshack or Photobucket. For instance, you can use Wikimedia Commons if the file would be useful to a Wikimedia project as well (i.e. Wikipedia), or else to Ourmedia which allows videos to be uploaded and then used on other sites.
Wiki syntax
See Wikipedia:Extended image syntax.
Logos
You can upload a new site logo. Upload it as Wiki.png to the wiki through Special:Upload and it will display on the leftmost corner of the Monobook, Monaco, Nimbus, Timeless or Vector skin, depending of the default skin (the other skins don't have logos).
Default logo size for Monobook/Vector skin is 150 x 150 pixels, and 220 x 150 pixels for Monaco skin. Logos must be in .png format to overwrite the old logo.
Note that for the Aurora skin, you should upload your file as Aurora-skin-logo.png. The size of this should be between 450-500 x 81 pixels, and should also be a .png file.
It is recommended you protect File:Wiki.png (and if using Aurora, File:Aurora-skin-logo.png) so that only administrators can change it.
Favicon
You can also update the site's favicon by uploading it as Favicon.ico. For best results, this should be 16 x 16 pixels and must be in the .ico format.
It is recommended you protect File:Favicon.ico so that only administrators can change it.
Image galleries
The <gallery> tag is a MediaWiki feature that creates image galleries; a nice, easy way to display several images together.
<gallery> File:ShoutWiki blocktext.png File:ShoutWiki blocktext.png|Captioned File:ShoutWiki blocktext.png|[[Main Page|Links]] can be put in captions. </gallery>
produces:
Links can be put in captions.
Brackets are used for adding links within captions. Captions are optional. Images are separated by newlines. The width of the gallery can be changed in your preferences.
